The Author:
Susan Howatch was born in England in 1940. She received a law degree from the University of London and later spent eleven years in America where she married and had a daughter. After four years in Ireland she returned to England in 1980, and in 1984 she began work on her current series of novels in Salisbury, her fictional Starbridge, where her home overlooked the cathedral.
